Righteousness & Holiness Clarified

Righteousness and holiness cannot be confused. You do not need to do anything (works) to gain righteousness.

Righteousness is a free gift from Christ Jesus, when you accept Him seeRomans 5:9-19. When you have this [righteousness], you stand in the presence of God without a sense of guilt or sin.

Holiness is living a pure life after being saved (Born again). It is our response to righteousness; a fruit of righteousness.
Its like I give you a clean white shirt (righteousness). Now as to how you keep it clean (holiness) is up to you.

However, the Bible says in Hebrews 12:14 "Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:"
Holiness is needed after being born again. You cannot continue to wallow in sin after receiving the righteousness of Christ, otherwise you become like Paul said, "....crucify Christ again". You must continue to live in purity when you receive the righteousness.

..... if you really believe in Jesus you will not walk in sin....

1John 3:9; "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God."

When you believe God and His word, then righteousness is accounted to you. For instance His word says "thou shall not lie". If you believe it and you go ahead and not lie then you know you have no sense of guilt standing in His presence; the righteousness of God imputed upon you as a reason of your belief.

Your belief and acceptance of Christ Jesus is that which causes God to give you the free gift of righteousness and the yielding of your body to the righteousness is holiness.
